ABOUT THE BOOK

“As long as people are reading this book, Bella will be with us still.” —Gloria Steinem

Meet unique and outspoken Bella Abzug, the iconic Jewish politician and activist who fought for justice and women’s rights, in this compelling picture book biography.

Battling Bella Abzug was born bellowing! From her childhood in the Bronx to her years as a lawyer, activist, wife, mother, and congresswoman, Bella battled for justice and fairness for everyone. Inspired by her Jewish upbringing and wholehearted belief in tikkun olam—repairing the world—she spoke her truth everywhere she went. Even when it wasn’t appreciated. Bella just kept on battling!

Sarah Aronson and Andrea D’Aquino spotlight this trailblazer who helped kickstart the modern women’s movement—with humor and passion—always in one of her trademark wide-brimmed hats. An unstoppable and unforgettable leader who showed the world a vision for the future—that a woman’s place was in the house—the House of Representatives! Abzuglutely!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sarah Aronson began writing for kids and teens when someone in an exercise class dared her to try. Since then, she has earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults and published books for kids and teens inclusing Beyond Lucky, The Wish List series, Just Like Rube Goldberg and Brand New Bubbe. Her picture book biography of Bella Abzug, called Abzuglutely!: Battling, Bellowing Bella Abzug (Calkins Creek, an imprint of Astra Books for Young Readers, with amazing illustrations by Andrea D’Aquino) hits the shelves on October 15! When Sarah is not writing or reading (or making great soup or riding her bike along the lake), she is talking to readers about creativity, writing, and social action! She loves working with other writers one on one or in one of her classes at the amazing Highlights Foundation. Warning: When she gets really excited, she makes funny faces and talks with her hands. Don’t be shocked if she talks about the power of play. In March 2024, Sarah was awarded the Prairie Writer Award for contributions to literature and literacy. She lives in Chicago, Illinois.
