In the fall of 1979, Anton Winter returns from the Peace Corp to find that his father—late night television star Buddy Winter, has suffered a nervous breakdown and lost his gig. Anton has lost his footing and begins by seeking out the friendship of his upstairs neighbor, John Lennon, and by breaking out of the family nest to find himself.
