Before Pride was a celebration, it was a riot—something we remain acutely aware of as we spend Pride month protesting and demanding justice for our Black citizens.
This year, alongside our authors, in addition to raising our voices in protest, we’re celebrating Pride by reflecting on everything it means—for us today, for those in the LGBTQIA community who came before us, and for the future. In partnership with the OUT Foundation and Ben & Jerry’s, we’re excited to invite you to Big Ideas Night Presents: Pride on Tuesday, June 16 at 8:00 PM EST on Zoom.
You’ll hear from authors Alicia Garza (The Purpose of Power), John deBary (Drink What You Want), R. Eric Thomas (Here For It), Jesse Szewczyk (Tasty Pride), and Nico Tortorella (Space Between), and Arlan Hamilton (It’s About Damn Time) as they share stories and readings about what Pride means to them. The evening’s program will be moderated by Will Lanier, executive director of the OUT Foundation.
About The OUT Foundation:
The OUT Foundation is comprised of LGBTQ+ members and allies. Our mission is to remove the barriers that block LGBTQ+ individuals’ access and participation in health, wellness and fitness to ensure their success. We are dedicated to nurturing, empowering, and celebrating LGBTQ+ bodies and minds to guarantee that our community thrives. The OUT Foundation is the first of its kind in the nonprofit field. We started as a small workout group in NYC in 2011. Our goal was to bring together members of the LGBTQ+ community for a monthly workout. It was strictly social. Only when more and more people began showing up did we begin asking for donations to give to local NYC charitable organizations. After 6 years of hosting hundreds of events nationwide and raising money for other LGBTQ+ organizations, we decided to fix our full attention behind developing our own 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Some of our initiatives include LGBTQ+ pride workouts, unique health and fitness scholarships to at-risk LGBTQ+ young adults, gender-affirming healthcare support services, inclusive education, and advocacy in fitness spaces.
