9798985888423Did Cinderella live happily ever after? You might think so until you look more closely at the hidden messages in beloved fairy tales. In this book, fairy tales are analyzed in terms of the underlying messages about marriage, agency, power, suffering, and good versus evil, with a focus on how male and female characters differ in each of these areas. Beall offers a data-driven approach that brings a fresh prospective and provides clear evidence for the hidden messages in these beloved tales. Beall wrote this book after she sought escape in fairy tales following a bad day. As she read the stories, she realized there were consistent themes – most female characters are passive and weak, while male characters are active and powerful. Moreover, powerful men were mostly good, whereas the few powerful woman were often evil. “Men marry up based on their intelligence and feats of bravery, whereas women marry up always because they’re beautiful,” said Beall. “And marriage for female royalty is no picnic— they have little power, are at the mercy of their husbands, and are often attacked by jealous rivals. Given all of these dynamics, I’m pretty sure Cinderella didn’t live happily ever after.” Beall said the end conclusion is not whether fairy tales are good or bad, but rather, what messages they deliver about life, even if unintentionally. She hopes that readers realize that these fairy tales reinforce certain types and attitudes among the two genders. “Fairytales have a profound effect because they include archetypes that influence our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions,” said Beall. “The result is that women may feel powerless, may have unrealistic expectations of romantic relationships, may worry about breaking the rules, and may be overly sensitive to the judgements of others. “ Beall plans to explore these issues in further depth in her next book, tentatively titled Only Prince Charming Gets to Break the Rules: Gender and Rule Violation in Fairy Tales and Life.
