Random House June Happy Hour: Afia Atakora
June 30 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
VIRTUAL ZOOM EVENT FROM RANDOM HOUSE
These past months have been incredibly challenging, as we fight a global pandemic and demand justice for our Black citizens. At RHBC, books have always been a haven for reflection and learning, particularly in times of upheaval. They offer new perspectives and often share narratives from history that help us contemplate the issues of today and consider how we might shape the future.
With such reflections in mind, Random House is thrilled to share their June Spotlight pick: Conjure Women by Afia Atakora. Through her extensive research from primary sources, including first-person accounts, diaries, autobiographies recounted through amanuenses, and discussions with midwives and doctors, Atakora imbues her novel with historical truths—and the results are powerful.
Conjure Women centers on a mother and daughter with a shared talent for healing—and for the conjuring of curses. It will have you thinking about secrets, the bonds between family and friends, and the power of superstition.
